SVSOTP is a community-based outpatient treatment program for sex offenders, founded in 1985 by a group of area therapists with training and special interest in sex offender treatment. SVSOTP is a Private Corporation owned by the therapists who provide treatment. Its foundation is cognitive-behavioral group therapy focused on identifying and defining each offender’s offense cycle; developing his full understanding of the cycle’s formation and operation; and assisting him in formulating a clear and functional relapse prevention plan. In 2003, the program discontinued its adult treatment groups and is now focused entirely on treating adolescent offenders.
Kelly Sharpes is the current president and majority share-holder since the program transitioned into adolescent treatment only. He now runs the program with the assistance of one of the original founders, Dr. Richard (Dick) Wettstone. Kelly is a Licensed Professional Counselor with Virginia Certification as a Sex Offender Treatment Provider. Kelly Sharpes is the adolescent and individual counselor for sex offender treatment. He facilitates the weekly treatment groups, and individual therapy. Kelly has over twenty-five years of experience working with adolescents. He has an MA in Counseling; he is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with Virginia Licensure and is a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider by the State of Virginia . Kelly is on staff as a substance abuse counselor in the Life Recovery Program at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg , Virginia . He has been involved with therapy at SVSOTP since 1997.
Dick Wettstone, Ed.D., is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a private practice in Harrisonburg and has over twenty-five years of experience working with adolescents. Dr. Wettstone’s doctoral degree is in education and counseling; he is a Virginia licensed LPC and a Virginia Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Virginia Mediator. He provides intake assessments, most of the entrance testing, consultation, and supervision as needed. He is the acting treasurer for the program.
SVSOTP believes that proper and thorough treatment for sex offenders is an essential element in reducing risk of future offense. We can, thereby, increase the level of safety for the whole community. The discouraging prognosis of lifelong predatory offense behavior is best deterred by applying the proven practices of sex offender treatment early in the life of the offender.
